Stratford Anchor Replacement Initiative

Fundraiser Complete! We have raised $265 for anchors. We will resume work towards spring! THANK YOU to all who have donated to make this possible!

Not far from here is one of only four state preserves that allow rock climbing. The Stratford Pillars sit on the Des Moines River West of Stratford. A condemned railroad bridge (minus the deck), has given us four free-standing limestone towers up to 25 feet tall and two abutments fifteen feet tall.

All of these pillars have fixed bolts protecting routes and on top as anchors. Many of these bolts are out dated and need to be replaced. Additional bolts are also needed to properly equip existing routes and the tops of the pillars. If you have climbed there, you’re aware of the need to fix the anchor problem. If you haven’t you can understand why we would want to make it a safe place to climb.

WNC pledges to fix the problem with help from YOU. With your donation, we will be able to buy the hardware to replace and equip this valuable resource to Central Iowa climbers.

We’ve got the tools and the time. Help us to make it possible.

Progress in Anchor Replacement

9/19 & 9/20
We have re-equipped the top of the Train-Go Pillar with three top rope stations and a rappel station. We have also equipped a new route “Central Scrutinizer” (5.10+) on the West face with four bolts.

Next in line is to re-equip the existing bolted routes on the Train-Go Pillar.

THANK YOU to all who have donated to make this possible!
